I’m sure you’ve heard about or seen photos of the beautiful Tun Sakaran Marine Park in Sabah. Find out how to book your cheap snorkelling tour package here!
The Tun Sakaran Marine Park which is located in the East Coast of Sabah is a relatively new tourism destination. The area is not too far from Sipadan and is surrounded the beautiful waters of the Celebes Sea.
How to get to Tun Sakaran Marine Park?
In all cases you need to fly to Sabah first where it is located. You can either fly to Kota Kinabalu first and then fly to Tawau or fly directly to Tawau if you’re departing from Kuala Lumpur. There are multiple direct flights to Tawau every day. The flight from KL takes around 2.5 hours.
Next, you will have to commute from Tawau airport to a seaside town of Semporna. Then it will be another 40 minutes boat ride to arrive at the Tun Sakaran Marine Park jetty.
What to do in Tun Sakaran Marine Park?
Snorkelling is a must at the marine park. The water is crystal clear and there are plenty of sea turtles and beautiful corals. The jetty is located at the Bohey Dulang island. If you observe the photo which I took above, the deep blue section of sea is actually an old crater of a sunken ancient volcano.
This leads to another activity which you can do which is hiking up Bohey Dulang. This is a guided climb as the trails are quite challenging and may be dangerous. Once you get to the top, the view is beautiful.
What are the islands to visit in Tun Sakaran Marine Park?
There are 4 islands included in the package:
- Pulau Tetagan (Sea Bajau – witness the life of sea gypsies who have been around for thousands of years)
- Pulau Bohey Dulang (jungle trekking and snorkelling)
- Pulau Mantabuan (snorkelling)
- Pulau Sibuan (snorkelling and white beach)
Is it safe to go to Tun Sakaran Marine Park?
The tour is done during the day so there will be minimal safety risks when going to Tun Sakaran Marine Park. The area is patrolled by Malaysian military around the clock. The islands around the park are not as secluded compared to Mataking or Sipadan islands.
